Guardware Releases New Anti-Porn Tool

OFFENBACH, Germany — Guardware has released a new version of its anti-porn system, claiming it can prevent employees from viewing sexual content in web browsers, regardless of the source.

Unlike most conventional browser filters, iShield and ScreenShield Enterprise do not rely on blunt URL blocking. Instead, both use an image-detection engine that filters content.

The software is designed to stop staff from viewing images that come from sources other than web browsing by blocking adult content embedded in emails or sent as attachments, on CDs, DVDs and other removable media.

Because the product has been designed for use in companies, the filtering sensitivity can be adjusted down to departmental level, a Guardware spokesperson said. The software also is said to self-determine whether to block an image or the entire screen, depending on content’s context.

The rising popularity of browsers other than Internet Explorer has prompted the new software, which will support Firefox, Mozilla and Netscape, though support for anti-porn filtering beyond Explorer is still patchy in many equivalent tools.

Pricing for Screenshield currently is unknown; however, pricing information for iShield and iShield Plus can be found on the Guardware website.
